Bonaventure is the relatively new musical brainchild of Andrew Albert (ex-Holiday Parade) and Dan Smyers (ex-Transition), having just released their first EP last week. Based in Nashville, the alt-rock band’s country influences are inescapable, with a distinct twang coating most of the vocals.

The EP opens with “Gaining Speed,” the most straightforward rock song on the record, with a driven guitar riff and kick drum. The song is fitting opener for a band sure to gain speed very soon and very quickly, as well as a fitting ode to the band’s DIY attitude, with lyrics like “I’m picking up the pen / I will write my own history” and “I will get by on my own two feet.” This is a refreshing opportunity for two young, yet veteran musicians to create music by themselves, for themselves, after years of touring and recording for labels.

A strong Augustana-esque vibe continues to build up, especially in the next song “I Dare You,” the EP’s single, a catchy mid-tempo ballad showing off the band’s diversity with piano and violin features. “Come Hell or High Water” is another song sure to make an impact, an almost 5-minute tune with bright guitars and Albert’s calm country drawl, singing about love, adversity, and life in general. Albert’s vocals are remarkable for the entirety of the album, adding the right amount of twang, falsetto, or grit at the right moment.

There’s not much not to appreciate on this album. The lyrics are honest and refreshing, painting images of dusty highways and acoustic guitars on porches. The layering of the instruments is always complex and interesting, but never overdone, with perfect complementation of acoustic and electric instruments. Bonaventure is shaping up to be a very promising project, and even if this genre doesn’t suit your taste, it’s nice be reminded there are still bands out there making music based on simple, genuine talent.
